The Accommodation

Sunnyside Cottage in Broughton Poggs is a perfect find for a bed and breakfast stay, tucked away in small hamlet that butts on to the Cotswold village of Filkins, in Gloucestershire.

Light floods in to this aptly named stone cottage that sits sideways onto a private driveway and no-through lane.

Restful and comfortable with great hosts

Inside, the cottage is restful, warm and elegant. Limestone floor and muted colours make it feel informal and laid-back with comfortable armchairs and sofas beside an open log fire.  The morning room, with its views of the garden, is the perfect place to start the day with breakfast, or time out with a magazine or book.

Jenny and Peter are well travelled and so welcoming and friendly, and with Jenny’s natural flair for interiors and design, has made this their family home for the past fourteen years. Parts of the cottage date back to the 16th century and with sensitive refurbishment over the years, all is light and gorgeous.

Guests are offered afternoon tea with delicious homemade cake or biscuits, or an early evening aperitif depending on the time of arrival.

Two lovely bedrooms

A short staircase rises and turns from the hall to the first floor comfortable bedroom. In dove grey, old white and burgundy, the room has a king sized bed and overlooks the garden and summerhouse and guarantees a peaceful stay. There’s a contemporary and spacious ensuite shower room with thick warm towels and robes for guests, along with pampering organic shampoos and soaps.

The second bedroom overlooks the courtyard and garden. Also with king sized bed and lovely fabrics it’s comfortable and inviting, with a traditional ensuite bathroom with bath and shower attachment.

Fresh fruits and local preserves

Breakfast is an early morning feast with full English breakfast, or Continental offering with delicious fresh fruits and cereal, with crumpets or pancakes, topped off with locally produced jams and honey. All from the many farms in the area, or local independent shops.

There is plenty to see and do around these parts with numerous villages, market towns, and places of interest to explore. If you fancy a bit of off-road cycling guests can borrow a couple of mountain bikes. Sunnyside Cottage is a great place to stay!

The Village and Location

Broughton Poggs is a small hamlet in a quiet setting just off the A361 between Burford and Lechlade. A smattering of Cotswold stone cottages line a couple of narrow lanes tucked away along stone driveways and footpaths with no-through road for traffic. A small stone bridge over Broadwell brook marks the boundary between Broughton Poggs and moments away, the larger village of Filkins.

The village is lucky to have The Five Alls, a great pub and place to eat and stay, a community village shop with post office, the tiny Swinford museum, and the Cotswold Woollen Weavers. The village also has a bowling green and 1930’s open air swimming pool.

Records show that its unusual village name is likely to have come about as ‘a farmstead by a brook associated with the Pugeys family’.  Many of the cottages in Broughton Poggs were originally built as farm workers cottages and part of the estate of the manor house, Broughton Hall.

The quiet and lovely church of St Peter’s in the Broughton Poggs is reached by a leafy lane and hidden from immediate view and well worth searching out for a visit.
